In his 1963 book on Jacobi, Valerio Verra brought the attention on the disproportion between the enormous importance of Jacobi’s thought in the age of Goethe, and the substantial underdevelopment of the Jacobi-Forschung – especially when compared to the fortune of other key figures of the transition from Sturm und Drang to Romanticism and Idealism such as Hamann and Herder. The picture of Jacobian scholarship, after more than fifty years, has completely changed, so much so that we can speak of a real Jacobi-Renaissance. The critical edition of both Jacobi’s works and correspondence (the former one already completed, the latter in the process of being completed), as well as the publication of his important notebooks (the so-called Denkbüchern) have given impetus to the rise of a new Jacobian scholarship, especially in Germany and in Italy. Jacobi’s philosophical thought is eventually emerging in all its due relevance, as it is now investigated in its roots, in its internal development and its impact on the culture of the time, and also in the breadth of its theoretical richness. Jacobi’s relationship to the philosophical tradition (Plato, Augustine, Spinoza, Pascal, Leibniz, Rousseau); his critical confrontation with the Enlightenment, Criticism and Idealism; the possible dialogue with later and contemporary philosophy; the ethics of freedom and of personality; the theory of intuitive knowledge and the critique of understanding; the antithesis between nihilism and faith; the connection between thought and language, reflection and feeling, as well as between philosophical writing, biography and literary form: Archivio di filosofia is calling for article proposals on these and other topics, in the conviction that the bicentenary of the philosopher’s death offers an opportunity to assess the results achieved by the scholarship, to reflect on unresolved questions, and to open new paths of investigation.
