Rationale. Our conference will consider Hegel as an interpreter of culture. Speakers will discuss specific interpretations of particular artworks that Hegel gives — for example of Sophocles’ Antigone — as well as the very idea of ‘culture’ (Geist) as an object of interpretive inquiry in Hegel’s work. That is, we will put into question Hegel’s judgments about specific cultural works and practices, while considering the extent to which the interpretation of culture in general must have ‘Hegelian’ characteristics.
