Hegel’s criticisms of Kant’s epistemology are famously outlined in texts such as the Phenomenology of Spirit, the Encyclopaedia or the Lectures on the History of Philosophy. In these works, Hegel praises Kant for overcoming the dogmatism inherent both to empiricism and to classical metaphysics, but opposes the dualism he associates with the Kantian conception of human cognition. However, this well-known criticism tends to overshadow the different and important ways in which Hegel is indebted to Kant’s theoretical philosophy, and particularly to the Critique of Pure of Reason. This workshop aims to revisit and reassess Hegel’s reading of the First Critique, in order to bring out its complexity, importance and enduring relevance.
