Kant’s Transcendental Deduction of the Pure Concepts of the Understanding is a pivotal part of the Critique of Pure Reason (1781/87). Its first version, the so-called A-Deduction, differs substantially from the B-Deduction published in 1787. In recent literature, however, the A-Deduction either has been largely overshadowed by the B-Deduction or has been discussed in terms of its relation to the latter.
Countering this tendency, the goal of this conference is to assess Kant’s A-Deduction on its own terms. Although the text comprises no more than 45 pages, its investigation is fundamental for understanding Kant’s conception of the human mind. Ideally, such investigation not only comprises a critical analysis of the relevant sections in the first Critique, but also an examination of the genesis and the function of the deduction within Kant’s critical project as it was conceived during the 1770s.
The conference will include talks and discussions on philosophical notions that play a key role within the A-Deduction (unity, ground, imagination, apperception, apprehension, affinity, …); on the structure of the argument of the A-Deduction as a whole; on the historical context of Kant’s A-Deduction; on what defines Kant’s transcendental approach as distinguished from logically- and psychologically-oriented enquiries into first concepts and principles of the understanding.
Everyone interested in these topics is cordially invited to participate in the conference.
The conference fee, including 5 coffee breaks and 2 lunch breaks, is €20 (without conference dinner) or €40 (with conference dinner).
