We live in a time of past revolutions and failed attempts at liberation. At the same time – or precisely because of this – the concepts of liberation and revolution retain a political potential for our present. But how exactly are we to understand the relationship between revolution and liberation? Can true liberation be realized through revolution alone? And conversely, does revolution not aim at something that still points beyond attempts at liberation? Gunnar Hindrichs and Christoph Menke have published two fundamental books on these questions, Theory of Liberation (2022) and Philosophy of Revolution (2017). In conversation, they will examine the relationship between revolution and liberation from different angles: How does the Exodus narrative help us in our understanding of freedom and liberation? What role does art play in revolution? How can we understand the relationship between the being and the becoming of freedom?

The conversation is led by Wacyl Azzouz and Alexey Weißmüller.
