A three-day conference on June 4.- 6. 2020, at the University of Warwick
Organized by Filip Niklas, Ahilleas Rokni, Mert Can Yirmibes and Edmund Smith
Confirmed speakers: Markus Gabriel (Bonn), Anette Sell (Bochum), Adrian Johnston (New Mexico), Brigitte Falkenburg (Dortmund), Sebastian Rödl (Leipzig).
This conference aims to examine and interrogate the concepts of objectivity, of the idea, and the transition of logic into nature, featured in Hegel’s seminal work, The Science of Logic. Objectivity is a term that is often loosely deployed in discourses concerning what is real, what is the world, or something standing independently on its own. For Hegel, objectivity emerges as the truth of subjectivity and concerns the specific relations that are either mechanical, chemical or teleological.
It is on the strength of objectivity, however, that the final element of the Logic is derived: the idea. If Hegel is right, then the idea turns out to be the most explicit rendition of pure thinking and ontology. The idea fully accounts for the evolutionary dialectic of thought, characterized in its structures of maximal identity-in-difference: life, cognition and the absolute idea. True to this absolute idealism, and fulfilling its latent freedom, the complete system of logic mutates into the system of what is extra-logical. This is nature.
This is now the third installment of a series of conferences that have aimed to closely examine the logical moves, the subtle specificities and technical language of Hegel’s all-demanding treatise. As before, exegetical papers are principally preferred, but we also welcome contributions that engage Hegel’s notion of objectivity, the idea and nature, jointly with other philosophical theories and systems. We would also welcome contributions that link Hegel’s notion of nature with present issues in environmentalism and ecology, inasmuch as they elucidate what is unique to Hegelian thinking.

If you would like to present a talk, please submit a ready anonymized abstract in .pdf of no more than 500 words, specifying broadly what your talk will focus on and what its strategies are, by no later than 5th January 2020 to: hegelwarwick@gmail.com.
Please note that we ask that your presentation should be no longer than 25 minutes long.
Lodging and travel bursaries may become available. We ask that you please indicate in your e-mail whether you would like to be considered for bursaries.
