On 21 August 2024, Prof. Robert Stern passed away at the age of 62.

Robert Stern graduated at St John’s College, Cambridge, where he became a Research Fellow. From 2000, Prof. Stern was Professor at the University of Sheffield, and from 2004 to 2008, he was the Head of the Department of Philosophy. He also served on the editorial board of the European Journal of Philosophy and was President of the British Philosophical Association. In 2019, he was elected a fellow of the British Academy.

Professor Stern was renowned for his work in the history of philosophy, particularly in nineteenth century post-Kantian German philosophy, with a focus on Kant and Hegel. His research interests also included epistemology, metaphysics, ethics and political philosophy.
Among his many works, he was the author of The Radical Demand in Løgstrup’s Ethics (2019), Kantian Ethics: Value, Agency, and Obligation (2015), Understanding Moral Obligation: Kant, Hegel, Kierkegaard (2011), Hegelian Metaphysics (2009), Transcendental Arguments and Scepticism: Answering the Question of Justification (2000), and Hegel, Kant and the Structure of the Object (1990).
