hpd-holidays: Francesco Campana, “L’ironia di Antigone nella lettura di Hegel” (PUP, 2020)

hegelpd takes a summer holiday. In this period we will be sharing recent essays and reviews by our research group.

We are pleased to share the essay L’ironia di Antigone nella lettura di Hegel by Francesco Campana, published in the volume Morality, Ethics, Religion between Classical German Philosophy and Contemporary Thought. Studies in Honor of Francesca Menegoni, edited by Luca Illetterati, Armando Manchisi, Michael Quante, Alessandro Esposito and Barbara Santini (Padova University Press, 2020).

Here below you can find the abstract of the text:

This article aims to illuminate Hegel’s characterization of Antigone as «the eternal irony of the community», which notably appears in his Phenomenology of Spirit. Thanks to a comparison with other kinds of irony that are present in Hegel’s thought (i.e. Socratic irony, on the one hand, and Romantic irony, on the other), I will identify and describe the particular version of irony that defines Sophocles’ character. Antigone’s irony, I will argue, certainly belongs to antiquity, in some ways even more than Socratic irony; however, at the same time, Antigone’s irony exhibits some elements that place it at the very beginning of the path that culminates in the constitution of modernity.
