CFP: «Symphilosophie» (vol. 5, 2023), “Romantic Aesthetics and Freedom”

We are very glad to give notice of the Call for Papers for the issue of «Symphilosophie» (vol. 5, 2023), devoted to Romantic Aesthetics and Freedom. Gues ìt editor will be Anne Pollok (Universität Mainz).

Below you can find the text of the call.

***

For this volume 5, we are particularly interested in the philosophical relation between the artist and the exercise of freedom through the creation of works of art. On the one hand, this issue will attempt to better illuminate the original approaches to aesthetic form in Romanticism (the fragment, irony, the genre of the letter, and the practice of letter-reading that draws upon Empfindsamkeit and the Aufklärung, but in its own original manner), a topic whose influence extends into the twentieth century’s considerations of aesthetic expression and art as symbolic form. On the other hand, the realization of freedom by means of art could be viewed as a path of emancipation – part of the quest by women intellectuals, in particular, to participate in current discussions, developing a voice of their own that would also change the public perception of women as active participants in philosophical discussions. This gives rise to the fundamental question of this volume 5: in what ways do artistic creation and expression represent an increase in freedom, both societally and artistically?

Special attention will be paid to papers written in the languages of the journal other than English. In order to promote language diversity, papers in French, German or Italian would be most welcome. «Symphilosophie» also aims to have gender-parity among the contributors.

Apart from a section on the main topic, «Symphilosophie» also has a further section containing miscellaneous essays. Original research articles on any other topic of philosophical romanticism will be considered for the miscellaneous section.

The deadline for all contributions to this fifth issue is 31st March, 2023.

All research article submissions (max. 12,000 words including footnotes) should be anonymized, and include a short abstract (150 words maximum), both in English and in one of the other three languages of the journal, as well as a selection of 5 keywords, also in these two languages.

Proposals for contributions should be submitted to the following address: editors@symphilosophie.com

Research articles are subject to double-blind peer review. All submitted texts must adhere to the submission guidelines of the journal and the journal’s code of ethics. Any submission not following these guidelines will not be considered. Further information on the evaluation procedures can be found here.
