***

The Hochschule für Philosophie München, in cooperation with the Katholischen Akademie in Bayern, is organizing a philosophical master class on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the publication of Hegel’s Grundlinien der Philosophie des Rechts with Prof. Dr. Dres. h.c. Michael Quante (Professor of Philosophy at the Westphalian Wilhelms University of Münster).

The basis for discussion will be Quante’s texts on the categorial foundation of Hegel’s practical philosophy. The aim of the course is to give philosophy students and young scholars the opportunity to relate Hegel’s thought to the present day in a discussion based on Prof. Quante’s reflections. Participants will prepare a series of texts in advance, which will then be discussed in the sessions. In addition, advanced students will have the opportunity to present their own research projects and discuss them in plenary.
On the second evening of the course, Prof. Quante will give a public evening lecture on the topic “From Hegel to Marx – Lines of the Philosophy of History”.

Application

To apply for a place on the master course, please send us:
– a short curriculum vitae of no more than two pages and
– a one-page letter of motivation in which you convincingly explain your interest and suitability for the master class.

Please send your application materials to irp@hfph.de no later than January 15th, 2023.

Call for Papers

Advanced students can apply to present their own projects, which will be discussed in plenary with Prof. Quante. The presentations should not exceed a maximum length of 25-30 minutes. In addition, the presenters will provide the participants with a handout of a maximum of two pages. This will be followed by a discussion of about 15-20 minutes. The content of the presentations should be related to the topic of the conference or to Professor Quante’s research interests.

Interested parties who would like to present their own research should submit an abstract or synopsis of no more than 1000 words with the rest of their application documents, in which they clearly and concisely describe the topic of their presentation.

Evening lecture

In conjunction with the master class, there will also be a public evening lecture at the Catholic Academy. The title of the evening lecture is “From Hegel to Marx – Lines of the Philosophy of History”.
Karl Marx’s thinking was decisively influenced by the philosophy of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. His critique of capitalism presupposes that humanity must produce and then overcome this social formation in a process of historical development. This historical-philosophical thesis is based on Marx’s philosophical anthropology, which also has a historical-philosophical dimension: Humanity can realize its essence only by passing through developmental stages of alienation. Marx draws on central components of Hegelian and left-Hegelian philosophy. They will be explained in this lecture as the basis of Marx’s philosophy of history. It will be shown that without them Marx’s critique of capitalism must remain incomprehensible.

Participation fee

The participation fee is 53 Euro including dinner on Monday, February 13th, and lunch and dinner on Tuesday, Feb. 14 as well as refreshments during the breaks. If you would like to eat vegetarian or vegan, please indicate this in your application.
