Luigi Pareyson (1918-1991), one of the most important Italian philosophers of the 20th century, was one of the founders of modern philosophical hermeneutics. Throughout his life he tried to mediate between German and Italian philosophy. In his early writings he analyzed German existentialism and developed it in the direction of ontological personalism. Later, he interpreted classical German idealism in the light of renewed historiographical perspectives and, at the same time, developed aesthetics as a theory of “formativity.” Pareyson developed the first draft of a philosophy of interpretation in the sense of an ontology of the inexhaustible and an ontology of freedom.
